The Very Best Of prom In The Movies Published on May 31, 2011 by FilmShaft Staff
The concept of ' prom prom night' might be a tad strange to us Brits, alas, it does seem to be making cultural headway in this country. In the USA it appears to be a rite of passage where you get drunk/get stoned and try to get laid. But wait a minute! Prom is a Disney picture, summer dresses for weddings so they'll be none of that, thank-you-very-much. The new movie follows several couples through the trials of preparing for the most important night in high school. To celebrate the movie’s June 3rd cinema release we’ve taken a look at famous proms in some of the best loved high school movies ever.
Pretty in Pink (1986)
This John Hughes classic starring Molly Ringwald is a quirky Cinderella story about a consignment store obsessed girl who falls for the rich boy. Many obstacles get in the way of Andie (Ringwald) and rich boy Blane McDonnagh’s (Andrew McCarthy) budding romance, namely Andie’s best friend Duckie (Jon Cryer), but everything comes together with the help of a magnificent pink prom dress . It also features a cracking song by The Psychedelic Furs which was a hit in itself.
High School Musical 3 (2008)
High School Musical gave the world Zac Efron. A new star is born or crime against humanity? Prom is set to singing and dancing in the third and final instalment of Disney’s musical journey through the formative teenage years. HSM3 takes place in senior year, and features, not surprisingly, the uncertainty facing the students as their remaining high school days disappear. Prom is a lavish affair, a real “ cheap summer dresses cheap summer dresses;Night to Remember” as the cast sing and dance their troubles away. If all life’s a stage, these teens are certainly making the most of it. Who can forget Troy (Zac Efron) wooing Gabriella (Vanessa Hudgens) on prom day?
Mean Girls (2004)
Next to make our list is the brilliant Mean Girls based on the novel Queen Bees and Wannabes adapted by the multi-talented Tina Fey. The film stars a pre-meltdown Lindsay Lohan as Cady, a formally home-schooled (in the wilds of Africa!) teen who transfers into the hostile environment of an American High School. The popular girls, led by Regina George (Rachel McAdams), poach Cady and make her one their own, turning her more alternative friends. The ‘Spring Fling’ comes along and serves as mood-lit, sparkly venue for redemption.
Never Been Kissed (1999)
"I'm the coleslaw king of the world!" cries David Arquette in victory of having glugged an entire barrel of the stuff and instantly becomes the coolest dude in school. After being victim to mass bullying and the nickname “Josie Grossie” during high school summer bridesmaid dresses UK summer bridesmaid dresses UK, Josie Geller (Drew Barrymore) heads back to high school for an undercover assignment for her job at the Chicago Sun-Times. While undercover Josie (Barrymore) befriends the “in” crowd, is asked to prom by the most popular boy in school, and relives all of the things she wished for when she was in high school. All of this happens while she is falling head over heels with her Shakespeare loving English teacher (Michael Vartan).
10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
In one of Heath Ledger’s most famous roles, the audience follows the story of geek Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s attempt to get the most popular girl in school (Larisa Olyenik) to go on a date with him. For his plan to work, he must get her sister (Julia Stiles) to find a date for the prom. The geek pays bad boy Patrick Verona (Ledger) to accompany her, but, as the story always goes, the two fall in love. The most iconic scene has to be when Ledger belts out an impressive performance of “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You” from the high school bleachers.
Footloose (1984)
Two years before Pretty in Pink, we were treated to one of the classic rebellious youth pictures of the 1980s. Footloose musically pitted a young Kevin Bacon’s city teen Ren against the elders of his new country hometown. Ren fights a delicate fight; trying to liberate rock ‘n’ roll and dancing in his stuffy new Christian surroundings while winning the affection of Ariel (Lori Singer). As the senior prom starts, has Ren done enough to convince the populous that dancing doesn’t always mean damnation?
She’s All That (1999)
Freddie Prinze Jr. stars as Zack Siler, a cocky jock who makes a bet he can turn the most unattractive girl in the entire school, Laney Boggs (Rachel Leigh Cook), into prom queen. After several failed attempts to be let into her life, Zack finally gets an invite to an artsy club where Laney is performing an interpretive drama piece. The two start to see each other socially and sure enough they’re soon an item. A classic 90’s flick, which we all hate to love.
Napoleon Dynamite (2004)
In his debut, Jon Heder delivers perfectly in the role of a socially awkward high school boy dealing with the ups and downs of high school life. Napoleon (Heder) attempts to help his social outcast friend Pedro (Efren Ramirez) win class presidency, while trying to jump into the social scene by asking an equally-as-awkward girl, Deb (Tina Majorino), to prom. The iconic image of Napoleon and Deb at prom will remain in our minds forever.
Prom (2011)
Bringing new life to the classic prom format, PROM tells us multiple overlapping stories in the lead up to the most important night in high school. As the almost mythical event draws nearer the film follows Nova Prescott (Aimee Teegarden) as she faces difficult decisions between her perfect prom or the guy threatening to shake it up (Thomas McDonell). Some students’ relationships are igniting while others unravel; secrets are kept and gossip abounds. Prom treats us to all the insecurity cocktail prom dresses allure prom dresses allure prom dresses, beautiful, unique flower girl dresses, silk gowns and sequin gowns for 2011, on sale or clearance bridesmaids dress bridesmaids dress anticipation, blossoming love and heartache that lead up to the most memorable night of these teens’ lives.
