At a winery, couples may say their "I dos" on a scenic hilltop, inside a candlelit barrel room or underneath a decorated patio.

"It's not so much just a venue location for the wedding guests, it's an actual experience for their guests," said Kenna Krivacsy, an events coordinator at Wiens Family Cellars.

Wine country weddings have grown in popularity over the past five or six years, with wedding and reception packages ranging from $75 to $200 per person depending on the package and the venue. Since weekends are the first choice, many wineries offer a weekday discount.

At Wiens Family Cellars, couples can hold their wedding and reception in the barrel room or one of two garden vineyard settings. The larger one holds more than 500.

"We have a little bit more intimate wedding venue which is pushed up against the vines, really nestled into it," Krivacsy said. "It holds up to 200."

According to Krivacsy, the demand for weddings has increased exponentially over the past two years.

"It's changing," she said. "It's now year round -- we're finding so we don't have an off season any more."

"Vines will go from a bright, bright green to burgundies and oranges around the time of fall," Krivacsy said.

But some couples hold their weddings before or after the growth season, when the branches are bare. It's a dramatic choice because it's easier to see the shape of the vineyard's landscaping, a line cocktail dresses according to Annemarie Cota, wedding coordinator at Wilson Creek Winery.

Wilson Creek Winery is a family-owned facility with three wedding locations to choose from, all of them outdoors: a white gazebo, a vineyard view stage or the concert stage. For the wedding toast, one of the most popular choices is the winery's own almond champagne.

But couples don't need to be connoisseurs to appreciate the winery's Tuscan setting, Cota said.

"We get a mix of people in here," she said. "There are some people that are wine lovers, some that don't really have a taste for wines."

Just as important to couples as the time of year is the time of day for the ceremony. Late afternoon wins hands down, an ideal time for photographs followed by a sunset reception.

"As long as you go down the aisle an hour and a half before sunset," said Christina Falik, owner and wedding coordinator at Gershon Bachus Vintners. "You want the sun lower in the sky, so you have better shadow. We are very much about ambiance in our lighting -- I find that to be desirable for the brides."

Gershon Bachus Vintners' most popular wedding spot is its Roman gazebo, with a 360-degree view of the surrounding vineyards and countryside. Couples can also be married under a covered twilight patio, with a hand-painted sky on the roof.

Holding weddings is a labor of love for Falik, who runs the business with her husband. "It's always been my dream job," she said. "This is about making things happen for other people because it's just such a special day."

Wine country weddings are typically booked anywhere from six months to 15 months in advance. While most wineries supply food and beverages for the reception, couples choose their own vendors to provide music bridal strapless wedding dress bridal strapless wedding dress, photographers, flowers and cake.

Some wineries hold about a dozen weddings a year, while others may do several in a week.

South Coast Winery Resort and Spa holds more than 100 weddings a year.

"We can hold up to 150 to 300 a year because we have so many venues," said Crystal Magon, South Coast Winery's director of sales and marketing. "We have 36 acres of beautiful vineyard property."

Popular sites at South Coast include the winery's bell tower, the elegant winemaker's gold room and a rose arbor with a sweeping view of the hills, valleys and vineyards below.

"I'm a romantic," Magon said, "and it kind of reminds me of the lives that lie ahead of them -- the life that's yours to create."
