She'll be the second most sought-after person at the reception (you're the first!), discount bridesmaid dresses and she should turn heads -- not raise eyebrows.

Now, your mother may be feeling a little self-conscious since she's older and heavier. She may try to tell you that her dress doesn't matter. It certainly does!

Let's take Mom to the mother-of-the-bride section (I cringe at that title, actually -- it makes me think of long skirts with a slit up the side and a beaded jacket), and get started finding her look.

First, help Mom find a color that she likes and that looks good on her. Don't get hooked up about a certain color clashing with the bridesmaids . They won't be standing next to one another.

Next, Mom needs to find her perfect length. Most Moms gravitate toward long dresses . They hide legs and veins, and with a long skirt, shoe height doesn't matter as much. But Mom can go shorter, too. Keep the hemline at the knee.

Then, we'll look at necklines. Sweetheart and scoop necklines work great for moms, but bateau is also a good choice. Most moms will want to add a jacket or scarf to hide their arms. I prefer a scarf -- you can wear it so many ways.

A few final tips from me to Mom:

1. Ruching hides a multitude of sins.
2. Stay away from beading. Clean, classic fabrics look more luxe.
3. When you accessorize, keep it simple with a cuff or bracelet, brooch or teardrop earrings.

Now, let's talk about the mother of the groom. If your mothers aren't acquainted yet, get them together! Take them both shopping. This way, you can discover your mother-in-law's taste. Please don't judge her fashion by her living room decor.

Your man's mom wants to look good, too. It's her son getting married -- she's proud, and she wants everyone to say "wow!" when they see her. Traditionally, the mother of bride chooses her dress first, but some moms are so polite, they'll drag their feet waiting for the other woman to get her dress. Maybe your mother-in-law gets hers early and your mom will get off her backside and pick her own!

If you take the moms shopping and they're buying off the rack at the department store, get a few options in various lengths, colors and styles. Staple the receipts to the garment bags, hang them up for a few weeks, then try on the dresses again. Hopefully, this fresh perspective makes the right choice stand out, plus size cocktail dresses with sleeves plus size cocktail dresses with sleeves and you can return the rest of the dresses. Also, it's perfectly OK if one mom wants to wear a short dress and the other wants to go long.
